Need for Teaching Candidates Remains High for the State’s Rural Schools

https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/438790603468312577/Ni8a3Kui.jpegDENVER – May 19, 2015PEBC’s Boettcher Teacher Residency, which prepares people to have exceptional teaching careers through a hands-on master’s degree program, is seeking candidates immediately for its 2015-2016 cohort to fill teaching positions in southern Colorado in more than 12 school districts throughout the Alamosa, Durango and Cortez areas.

In this region, the need for elementary teachers and high school math and science teachers is especially high. Interested, qualified candidates must apply online by May 30, 2015, and the 2015-2016 cohort will begin July 20. PEBC will host an information session about the Boettcher Teacher Residency this Thursday, May 21, at Adams State University’s McDaniel Hall, Room 281, at 5 p.m.

Through the Boettcher Teacher Residency, candidates have the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in education through Adams State University, a Colorado teaching license, and a full-year apprenticeship in a classroom alongside an experienced teacher. Candidates may teach in a variety of high-needs, rural Colorado school districts in southern Colorado and receive ongoing professional development support throughout their careers.

“The need for qualified teachers in the southern part of the state remains high, particularly at the elementary and high school levels,” said Rosann B. Ward, PEBC president. “We’re focused on recruiting candidates from the local community who know the area and the people, and are interested in staying and making a long-term contribution to the community through teaching. Through the Residency, candidates can be confident they’ll receive the comprehensive preparation they need to become effective teachers for the duration of their careers.”

The Boettcher Teacher Residency program stresses the importance of hands-on, mentored learning and training for teachers. Unlike other teacher training programs, Residency participants go through a one-year apprenticeship alongside a mentor teacher before leading a classroom of their own. Since its establishment in 2004, the Boettcher Teacher Residency has prepared and retained a network of over 180 effective teachers who have been placed in school districts throughout Colorado.

To be eligible to apply for the 2015-2016 school year, candidates must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June 2015, be a United States citizen, permanent resident or able to legally work in the U.S. Candidates who have already completed a teacher preparation program are also encouraged to apply.
