Political Novelist Christopher Buckley Headlines Sixth Annual JFS Executive Luncheon on May 11
~Annual Fundraiser Set to Attract Hundreds to DCPA’s Seawell Grand Ballroom
Jewish Family Service of Colorado (JFS) is hosting the sixth annual JFS Executive Luncheon and fundraiser, featuring special guest Christopher Buckley, “the quintessential political novelist of his time,” according to Fortune magazine. The luncheon is Tuesday, May 11, at the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (13th St. and Arapahoe St.). Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and the program will start promptly at noon. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased by contacting JFS at 303-597-5000 or www.jewishfamilyservice.org. Sponsorship packages start at $1,500.
All proceeds from the event will help support local community programs offered through JFS in its four key areas of mental health counseling, senior services, disability and employment services, and family safety net services. Founded in Denver in 1872, JFS is a nonprofit community agency serving people regardless of age, race, faith, or income.
Buckley, winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor, has been hailed by audiences for his incisive, funny, and witty presentations. He is the author of 13 books, including the 2008 best-seller, “Supreme Courtship.” His book “Thank You for Smoking” was developed into a critically acclaimed major motion picture.
He poignantly chronicles in his latest book, “Losing Mum and Pup: A Memoir,” how he coped with the tragic loss of his father, William F. Buckley, the father of the modern conservative movement, and that of his mother, Patricia Taylor Buckley, a prominent New York socialite, in an 11-month span between 2007 and 2008.
Buckley offers insight about his experience as an adult orphan, which has become a reality of life for him and many other members of the baby boom generation. “I do realize that ‘orphan’ sounds like an overdramatic term for becoming parentless at age 55, but I was struck by the number of times the word occurred in the 800 or more condolence letters I received after my father died.” He offers words of comfort and warmth to those who are coping with the loss of a parent, while recounting his unique personal story of growing up with legendary parents
“We’re looking forward to share Christopher Buckley’s intellect, charm, and wit with the metro Denver business community,” said Dean Prina, M.D., JFS development chair. “We are extremely grateful for Mr. Buckley’s participation in this important fundraiser and his gracious support of JFS.
“The JFS Executive Luncheon is an upbeat and inspiring way to support the vital programs of JFS, a community agency helping people overcome life’s challenges, regardless of age, faith, or economic background.”
CBS4 news anchor Jim Benemann will emcee the event. Major sponsors for the JFS Executive Luncheon include Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Denver Business Journal, Health One Rose Medical Center, Steve and Elizabeth Kris, Eric and Ellen Pollock, Peggy Goldman, Debby and Leonard Herz, MBH Enterprises, and Stanton and Jane E. Rosenbaum. Event chairs are Cary Chapman, Peggy Mayer, and Marc Spritzer.
