In the quest for media coverage, organizations must compete for both reporters’ attention and valuable media space. Before making the pitch, be sure you’re armed with these valuable PR tools: 1) a set of internal key messages that define your organization; 2) a press kit that includes background information, press releases, key facts and management profiles; and 3) a back-up plan if the reporter says no! When properly equipped for battle, you have a better shot at victory.
~DU Graduate Students Gain Real-World Experience at Local Human Services Agency
DENVER — April 25, 2008 — The John A. Hartford Foundation is touching the lives of seniors in Colorado by supporting the work of graduate students from the University of Denver at Jewish Family Service of Colorado (JFS), a local human services agency. The Foundation has awarded the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) a three-year grant for The Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education to educate masters-level social workers in the field of gerontology. The DU GSSW program, which is run by and originated from The New York Academy of Medicine, aims to increase the number of students who specialize in working with seniors and ultimately the number of social workers in the field of aging.
Through the grant, eight Master of Social Work (MSW) students receive stipends for their participation in the internship program each year. GSSW selected JFS as one of eight hub sites served by the interns in 2007-2008.

~Denver-Based Architectural Firm Designs ‘Best Sustainable Facility’
DENVER — April 24, 2008 — The U.S. Air Force recently honored the Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF) at Buckley Air Force Base with an Air Force Design Honor Award for its master plan, architectural design and interior design led by Coover-Clark & Associates, Inc., a Denver-based commercial architecture and design firm. The project was named “Best Sustainable Facility,” recognized for outstanding use of daylighting, energy efficiency, and sustainable, environmentally-friendly design. The AASF is a training and maintenance facility for the Colorado Army National Guard‘s fleet of Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters.

How can you truly know the value of your public relations efforts? No matter what type of campaign you implement, include some method to measure your success. One way to quantify the value of press coverage: calculate the cost of purchasing the equivalent space in advertising dollars. Whether it’s a half-page story or a thrity-second television spot, determine the equivalent cost from the media outlet’s advertising rate sheet. Once you’ve tracked dollar values for your press coverage, you may find that PR makes more cents than you think.
