Street Talk (Denver Business Journal)

~Denver Business Journal, 4/22/05

Street Talk may have to return to his former job selling buggy whips.

“The world just seems to be heading in the direction of more citizen journalism,” said J.D. McCartney, CEO, Xstatic Public Relations in Denver. “News reporters and editors aren’t the only people who determine what’s news.”

So Xstatic has added “blog relations” to its list of services. Blogs, for the uninformed, are Web logs, in which anybody can write anything. They’re gaining in popularity.

“There’s a whole audience out there whose primary source of information is no longer the general media,” McCartney said. “It’s not a big percentage, but that doesn’t mean they’re not important. … In a few years, a blog relations program may be as important as maintaining a Web site for our clients.”

Xstatic will offer to help companies start their own blogs, communicate with influential bloggers on behalf of companies and research the blogosphere to find the influential folks.

“If we’re working with a company with the latest techno gadget, we want to make sure someone in the blogosphere is talking about our gadget,” McCartney said. “So we need to keep up to date about what’s being said about a particular gadget, and which bloggers are the most likely to talk it up.”

Just one caveat, J.D.: Editors help prevent lawsuits from occurring when they clean up copy. Nobody’s sanitizing what goes into blogs. Fact-checking is a foreign concept.
